Overview
Geology is the study of the Earth - how it works and its 4.5 billion-year history. Geologists study some of society's most important problems, such as energy, water, mineral resources, the environment, climate change and natural hazards.
Entry Requirements
You are expected to have achieved at least a 5 in GCSE Geology, if taken, or a similar subject.

Interpreting the Geological Record which includes:
- Rock forming processes
- Rock deformation

Geological Themes which includes:
- Geohazards
- Geological map applications
- Geological evolution of Britain
Trips / Visits / Enrichment
You will explore the local Geology by visiting Cullercoats, South Hylton, South Shields and Scremerston. There will also be an opportunity to take part in a residential in Teesdale to study the geology around High Force. Annual trips overseas to locations such as Iceland & Naples.
Assessment
You will have three exam:
- Component 1: Geological Investigations: 2 hours 15 minutes, 35% of the qualification, 105 marks
- Component 2: Geological Principles and Processes: 1 hour 45 minutes, 30% of the qualification, 90 marks
- Component 3: Geological Applications: 2 hours, 35% of the qualification, 105 marks
You will also need to complete practical endorsement. This will include 20 practical activities which include fieldwork and lab-based tasks.
