FIRST CHOICE STUDENTS OF 2020 SET AN A GRADE RECORD

14 August

The high achieving students at Newcastle Sixth Form College hauled a record-breaking number of A-A* grades this year, with a select group of just 33 students receiving exactly 100 A-A* grades between them. These incredible results back up the 2019 results which put Newcastle Sixth Form College in the top 25% nationally for student progress at A Level.

The impressive students have been able to move onto their first choice University places, and after 2 years with NSFC and a final six months which were extremely challenging, can now embark on their higher education with these well-deserved results.

Newcastle Sixth Form College is by far the largest sixth form in the region with over 500 students receiving their A Level results last week, and with the challenges facing this group of students following the restrictions imposed by the Covid 19 pandemic, the results of all the students finally recognise their hard work and achievement this year. The exceptional education offered by the college which now offers 25 different A Levels, has massively increased the social mobility of students from the North East, and underpins the opportunity for young people across the region to achieve their ambitions.

Students from the college will now head off to the widest range of destinations, with this years crop of A Level recipients expected to attend well over 50 different university locations. Among our top achievers, students will be attending universities ranging from Cambridge, Durham, St Andrews, King’s College - London, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool Hope, Manchester, Lancaster, De Montfort, Newcastle, Northumbria and the London School of Economics.

The wide range of degree subjects these students will be studying is also impressive with subjects as diverse as Biomedical Science, History, Neuroscience, Law, Natural Sciences, Business Enterprise, Forensic Pyschology, Speech and Language Therapy, Medicine, Computer Science, Film and Television Production, Theoretical Physics, and Environmental Science.

Among our outstanding results were Louie Haigh who achieved 3 A* grades and will embark on his first choice destination of studying Spanish and Economics at Glasgow University. Stephanie Smith also received an A* and two A grades and was one of a number of students from the sixth form who will be attending the London School of Economics this Autumn, with Stephanie specialising in Economic History from this Autumn.

Gerard Garvey, Principal at Newcastle Sixth Form College commented, ‘We had an incredible group of students this year. Their hard work, determination and resilience over the last two years has made us all very proud, and the final results are recognition of their dedication. Our inclusive ethos at Newcastle Sixth Form College allows students to develop quickly and our specialist teaching nurtures all of students and encourages them to pursue their ambitions. We are extremely pleased that Newcastle Sixth Form was the ‘first choice’ college for so many students this year, and these results demonstrate just how much these students can achieve, with a diverse range of academic destinations and career choices now pursued by our class of 2020.’
