Media Studies equips you to critically evaluate media, exploring how messages are communicated, how institutions influence media production, and how audiences consume content. 

You'll examine media's role in society, its effects on audiences, and the impact of cultural, social, and political contexts.

GCSE - 5 or above in Media Studies or a similar subject.

Media Studies offers a blend of practical and theory-based lessons, allowing you to explore TV, films, and understand industry and audience reactions. You'll engage in discussions, practical workshops, and develop research and creative writing skills in an exciting classroom environment.

What can you do with a qualification in this subject?

There are a wide range of university courses and career pathways that you can take by studying A level Media Studies. 

This includes Digital Media, Marketing Executive, Journalism, Media, Buyer, Public Relations Specialist, Publisher, Social Media Executive, Television and Radio, Video Editor, and Writer are just some of the creative roles followed by a student of Media Studies.

Assessment

The assessment includes three components.


Component 1
(35%) covers Media Products, Industries, and Audiences, examining media language, representation, and contexts in forms like advertising, music videos, or newspapers.


Component 2
(35%) provides an in-depth study of three media forms, analysing set products such as TV, magazines, and websites.


Component 3
(30%) involves creating a media text based on research and a brief, accompanied by a statement of aims and intentions.

Trips, Visits & Enrichment

Media Studies students benefit from a wide range of visits, workshops and industry-linked enrichment opportunities designed to develop creative skills, build portfolios and explore progression routes into higher education and creative careers.

Visits & Workshops

Dec 26 - Creative London Trip - £200 Approx.
Visit world-renowned cultural institutions including the Victoria & Albert Museum and the Design Museum, with opportunities to explore exhibitions, creative industries and university progression pathways.

Guest Speakers & Progression Talks

Throughout the year, students have access to a variety of visiting speakers, university representatives and creative professionals who provide guidance on progression opportunities, careers and higher education.

These sessions include portfolio advice, career guidance, university application support and practical creative workshops designed to help students plan their next steps.

Enrichment Opportunities

Book Club
Book Club Enrichment is designed to encourage a love of reading and help students develop skills that support success across a range of subjects. Each week, students spend time reading their own chosen books, while also studying a shared novel and taking part in group discussions.

Reading regularly is proven to improve vocabulary, writing style and communication skills, making it particularly valuable for essay-based subjects and higher education study. Through discussion and reflection, students also develop their critical thinking and analytical skills while exploring new ideas and perspectives.

The Language in Sport
This enrichment is ideal for students with an interest in sport, media and communication. It explores how language is used to shape identities, influence audiences and represent individuals and organisations within the world of sport. Through a range of creative and collaborative activities, students have the opportunity to develop their communication skills, analyse sports media and share their own perspectives on current sporting topics and debates.

Public Speaking
This enrichment is designed to help students develop their oracy, communication and public speaking skills. Through practical, hands-on activities, students build confidence in presenting to a range of audiences, learning how to communicate ideas clearly and effectively beyond the content of a presentation slide or whiteboard. The programme focuses on developing persuasive speaking, presentation techniques and the confidence needed to succeed in academic, professional and everyday situations.
