Overview

Maths in context (Core Maths) is an excellent opportunity to study maths alongside your A levels and is available for those students who are not taking A level Mathematics.

You will have the opportunity to study areas of maths within various interesting contexts.

If you are interested in studying AS Core Maths alongside your 3 x A level subjects, then please discuss this during your enrolment appointment as students are selected for Core Maths as part of the entry process.

Maths in Context allows you to gain valuable UCAS points towards your university application.

What can you expect from this A level?

The subject will be delivered in three hours of lessons per week. You will study various areas of maths you may already be familiar with such as probability, correlation, statistics. This programme places Maths in a world context to encourage application of learning.

You will also be introduced to new areas such as linear programming which is useful for optimising profits within businesses.

What can you do with a qualification in this subject?

The subject helps with university applications and provides up to 28 additional UCAS points depending on your grade. Maths in context is a highly desirable subject for university applications.

Assessment

The subject has two 1 hour 40 minute exams.

The first paper is comprehensions and the second applications.

As part of Core Maths, you will be invited to various career events for students studying A Level Maths which take place on specific STEM related careers weeks, and you will also be invited to participate in activities including the Maths Olympiad which takes place each year and offers students a chance to demonstrate their confidence and strength in Mathematics.

Insurance Underwriter

Assess risk and determine insurance coverage and pricing based on statistical analysis of client data and market conditions.
Review applications and calculate premiums using mathematical models to evaluate the likelihood of claims.

Financial Assistant

Assist in preparing financial documents, maintaining accurate records, and conducting fundamental financial analysis to support budgeting and forecasting.
Monitor expenditures and report on financial performance, utilising mathematical skills to ensure accuracy in calculations.

Administrative Officer

Manage office budgets, expenses, and resources, utilising mathematical skills to analyse financial data and prepare reports.
Support decision-making processes by providing quantitative insights into budget management and resource allocation.

Sales and Inventory Coordinator

Analyse sales statistics and inventory levels using mathematical methods to optimise stock levels and pricing strategies.
Collaborate with sales teams to forecast demand and adjust inventories accordingly, ensuring profitability.

Risk Management Consultant

Use statistical techniques to evaluate potential risks within organisations, providing insights that inform risk management strategies.
Develop reports that outline risk exposure and recommend measures to mitigate them based on quantitative analysis.

Day 3: French Class & Fun Activities Galore

On Day 3 of the journey, our students started the morning with their first French lesson, diving into practical language skills in a lively and interactive session. They practised introducing themselves, sharing where they are from, and talking about their likes and dislikes — all in François! It was a fun and engaging way to build their vocabulary, boost confidence in speaking, and deepen their understanding of French culture and communication.
