North East A-level students still aspiring to university

07 August

New figures released by Newcastle Sixth Form College ahead of A-level results next week show north east students are not being put off applying to university by the new fees system.

This year the college has a record number of students (over 80) who have offers to study at Russell Group universities, which are classed as the leading universities in the UK for academic excellence.

More students – just under 400 – are doing A-levels at Newcastle Sixth Form College this year than any other school or college in the region, making it a key indicator as to how north east students are approaching university.

The figures also show that:

students are still applying to study a fantastic range of subjects at very diverse destinations, e.g. Marine Biology at Newcastle and Chemistry at Queen’s in Belfast

¦Newcastle College’s Higher Education fees are very competitive at £5,800 per year.
¦the college has a record number of students ‘staying on’ to study Foundation Degrees, which offer students the chance to develop their skills and knowledge.
¦the college has a growing number of students going straight into employment from A-levels, and also starting Apprenticeships.
Steve Gibson, Principal at Newcastle Sixth Form College, said: “It is fantastic to see that so many of our students are getting offers from some of the best universities in the country. We’re looking forward to them getting their results next week.”

“The world-class facilities that we are constantly investing in means that students are able to make the most out of their college experience and learn the skills that are vital for their chosen careers.”

The college will also be unveiling its brand new Sixth Form building in 2013, which will have state of the art learning spaces for students and will also be the first dedicated Sixth Form College in the city.

Next Thursday (16 August), Newcastle Sixth Form College students, along with thousands of others from across the region, will open their results and embark on bright futures.
