Shadow Minister visits college for workshop on violence

16 January

Shadow Home Affairs Minister Stella Creasy is visiting Newcastle Sixth Form College to discuss the issue of violence against women in the UK.

People are invited to join the debate on the causes of violence against women and ways it can be tackled at the special workshop at Newcastle Sixth Form College on Friday (January 18).

Ms Creasy, who is Labour MP for Walthamstow, will be leading the discussion and listening to the concerns and thoughts of local people.

Organised by the One Billion Rising in Britain campaign, a series of workshops is being held across the country to give people an opportunity to discuss why so many women suffer from violence and what steps can be taken to improve the situation.

The workshop is being hosted by SCENE (Sustainable Communities and Environments North East), which is the college’s dedicated community engagement project aimed at helping students to get involved in the community.

Rachael Little, Project Co-ordinator of SCENE, said: “We have a number of students who are planning to attend the workshop who are already involved in Amnesty International and the Team Kenya charity, but members of the public are invited to come along, as well.”

Stella Creasy MP said “One in three women in their lifetime will be beaten or raped and One Billion Rising is about women and those who love them standing up to say ‘something needs to change’. Across the country, people attending these workshops have come up with fantastic campaign actions; taking steps towards making a real difference. I look forward to meeting the campaigners on Friday and hope all those who support this ambition will join us.”

The workshop is being held between 2.30pm and 4pm in Newcastle Sixth Form College’s Rye Hill Campus site. Everyone is welcome to participate, but they must register first by emailing scene@ncl-coll.ac.uk or calling 0191 200 4453 to gain more information about where to meet.

One Billion Rising in Britain is a national campaign group that aims to end violence against women and girls in Britain and across the world. For more information about the cause, go to http://onebillionrising.org/
