History

Why study this subject?

We have selected a range of modules that give you the opportunity to study some of the most significant moments and characters in the development of modern European and world history. You will examine some key historical concepts such as revolution, dictatorship, democracy and genocide across a range of different countries and societies.

What can you expect from this A level?

In class, you will find a supportive environment in which discussion amongst peers and expert questioning from your teacher are key components of every lesson.

We dedicate lesson time every week to support you in the development of your written historical skills. There are opportunities weekly for you to access additional support from the History team via subject intervention sessions.

What can you do with a qualification in this subject?

Many students will progress onto History related courses at university and careers beyond, such as industry careers within the museum and heritage sector. 

A level History also facilitates progression into a range of wider areas such as law, politics, international relations and teaching.

Assessment

You will be assessed in History via a combination of examinations and coursework:

Unit 1: 1 hour 30 minutes examination (25% of A level grade).

Unit 2: 1 hour examination (15% of A level grade).

Unit 3: 2 hour 30 minutes examination (40% of A level grade).

Unit 4: Coursework (20% of A level grade).

Trips, Visits & Enrichment

History students benefit from a range of enrichment opportunities that bring the past to life beyond the classroom. Through museum visits and educations experiences, students deepen their understanding of key historical events, engage with primary sources and develop a greater appreciation of the impact history has on the modern world.

Visits & Workshops

Mar 27 - Discovery Museum - Free
Students have the opportunity to visit the Discovery Museum to explore exhibitions that support their study of British History. This experience provides valuable context to classroom learning and helps students engage with historical artefacts and local heritage.

Autumn TBC - Lessons from Auschwitz Programme - £75
Students may have the opportunity to take part in the prestigious Lessons from Auschwitz Programme, which includes a visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau in Poland. This powerful education experience encourages students to reflect on the Holocaust, develop a deeper understanding of its historical significance and consider its relevance in today's society. Due to the popularity of this programme, places are extremely limited and students are required to complete an expression of interest process.

Enrichment Opportunities

Book Club
Book Club Enrichment is designed to encourage a love of reading and help students develop skills that support success across a range of subjects. Each week, students spend time reading their own chosen books, while also studying a shared novel and taking part in group discussions.

Reading regularly is proven to improve vocabulary, writing style and communication skills, making it particularly valuable for essay-based subjects and higher education study. Through discussion and reflection, students also develop their critical thinking and analytical skills while exploring new ideas and perspectives.
