As the Duke of Edinburgh Awards celebrates its 70th year, Newcastle Sixth Form College were among the centres selected to attend the 70th anniversary celebrations which took place on Friday 2 May 2026. 

NSFC have an annual group of students entered into the DofE Silver Award with our latest group heading off on 1-3rd June to complete their practice expedition. The award which has four distinct areas of activity, build skills, physical and volunteering opportunities for students alongside the expeditions which take place along the A69 at Hadrians Wall.

The awards are an exceptional enrichment opportunity for students across NSFC and we have students start the award for the first time every year, and making great progress and experience each year as part of this programme.

Mark Carton, Director of College Services commented: 'I was very honoured to be representing Newcastle Sixth Form College at the 70th Anniversary Celebrations of the Duke of Edinburgh at Buckingham Palace.

It was a fantastic and very sunny afternoon with some inspiring talks and a chance to meet other colleges who are running this incredible programme. Speakers included the Duke of Edinburgh, Dame Kelly Holmes and England and Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman.
