This past week, Newcastle Sixth Form College proudly hosted an exciting Humanities Careers Week, filled with inspiring guest speakers and engaging activities designed to broaden students’ understanding of career opportunities within the humanities.

Kicking off the week, Dr. Adam Potts, Senior Lecturer in Philosophy at Newcastle University, shared his career journey and emphasised the vital role of critical thinking, reading, and reflection in today’s rapidly changing world. His talk encouraged students to appreciate the importance of philosophy and the humanities in developing analytical skills and ethical awareness.

Midweek, we welcomed Steve Tough and Melissa Laverick, Support for Schools Advisors from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP). They introduced students to a wide range of career pathways available within the Civil Service, including an insightful overview of the prestigious Fast Stream Programme. Their session highlighted the diverse opportunities and rewarding careers that can be pursued through public service.

The week concluded with a thought-provoking talk from David Ellis of Leeds Trinity University. He explored the various future pathways open to humanities students. He delved into the philosophical perspectives of notable thinkers such as David Hume and John Hick, demonstrating how philosophical ideas continue to influence contemporary thought and careers.

Thank you to all the speakers and contributors who helped make Humanities Careers Week a meaningful, inspiring, and informative experience for our students. We hope to continue fostering curiosity and ambition in the humanities and beyond.
