Entry Requirements

Find out what GCSE grades you need to study A Levels at Newcastle Sixth Form College

 

Our general entry criteria is four GCSEs at grade 9-4 plus English or Maths at grade 5 or above.

If you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 or above in either English or Maths, you will be required to re-sit this in your first year of A Levels with us.

If you have not achieved a GCSE grade 4 in both English and Maths will not be able to study A Levels with us, but may be able to study our Access to Level 3 programme. Typical requirements for this are 5 GCSEs at grade 3.

Subject specific entry criteria

You are expected to have achieved at least a GCSE grade 5 in the subjects you wish to continue with at A Level. If you are applying for A Levels in subjects not previously studied, your GCSE grade in a similar subject will be used.

Biology/Chemistry/Physics

You need GCSE Maths grade 6 or above.

Taking Double Science? You need grades 6/6 or above.

Taking Triple Science? You need at least a grade 6 in the science(s) you want to study.

 

Computer Science

You need GCSE Maths grade 6 or above.

 

Further Maths

You need GCSE Maths at least grade 7 or above, and also need to study A Level Maths.

 

Maths

You need GCSE Maths at grade 6 or above.

 

Psychology

 You need GCSE Maths at grade 5 or above.

 

Art, Craft and Design

You will need GCSE Art at grade 5 or above, or a suitable portfolio of work which can be assessed prior to acceptance to study the A Level course.
