Staff and students celebrated British Science Week this month by taking part in a series of fun interactive science and maths displays, workshops and competitions including ‘Best Lame Science Joke’, a Pi themed scavenger hunt, homemade bath bomb making and street science experiments, all organised by the Maths and Science departments at Newcastle Sixth Form College.
Christine Shields, Head of Biology and Chemistry said: “Celebrating British Science Week is a great opportunity for us to showcase our STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and to raise the profile of science and maths throughout the college.
“It’s also the chance for students who don’t study those subjects to have a go and get involved in some fun activities, like making bath bombs or the Pie Face Challenge!”
NSFC student Grace took part in some of the British Science Week activities. She said: “I really enjoyed the demonstrations, especially making bath bombs. I hadn’t realised that it was so easy to do – I’m going to try out different scent combinations and colours at home.”
British Science Week is an annual grassroots celebration of science, technology, engineering and maths with thousands of events and activities organized in schools, in communities and by a whole host of cultural organizations, businesses and other venues across the UK.
