Lord Mayor's Design Awards

Newcastle Sixth Form College building scoops top spot in Lord Mayor’s Design Awards

05 December

Newcastle City Council has been running The Lord Mayor's Design Awards since 1994. The aim is to encourage, promote and publicise the best in architecture and environmental design, to help improve the built environment for us all. Awards are given to outstanding projects in the fields of architecture, planning, environmental, urban and landscape design.

The multi-million pound Newcastle Sixth Form College officially opened in September this year boasting 45 classrooms, fully-equipped ICT and language labs, debating chamber and lecture theatre.

The new college, which is the only purpose-built sixth form college in the city, is designed to meet the latest best practice in sustainable development. The roof is covered with a variety of indigenous plants that will flower in summer to attract wildlife.

Showcasing a raft of unique design concepts, the outer northern wall includes cladding made of copper and aluminium, while the atrium has an impressive feature staircase which forms the centrepiece to the college reception known as The Hive.

Steve Gibson, Principal at Newcastle Sixth Form College said:

“We are delighted with the award for the new building. We have the very best facilities at our disposal in surroundings that have been designed and developed to the highest standards to create a dynamic world class learning environment.

“We are extremely proud of our reputation as a leading centre of excellence for further education and believe our new facilities will only enhance the achievements of our students as we move into a new era.”
