An insight into the NHS: Students take part in medical themed careers event

23 March

Newcastle Sixth Form College Access to A Level students were given the chance to find out more about a career in medicine and the NHS at a ‘Day in the life of a Doctor’ themed event organised and supported by NE1 CAN, NE1’s newest initiative to tackle youth unemployment and improve employment prospects for young people in the North East.

Students joined others from schools and college across Newcastle upon Tyne to take part in a series of medical themed activities and presentations, including hearing from some already working within the NHS, as well as current university medical students, giving them an insight into what studying and working in medicine is really like.

Newcastle Sixth Form College Career Advisor Stephen Kay said: “It’s important for students to start thinking about their career options early, so events such as this are vital in giving students a realistic insight into a particular industry.”

Student Sohail Ali said: “I enjoyed today. It was interesting to hear from people already working as part of the NHS and it definitely gave me lots to think about in terms of what I might like to do as a career once my studies are finished.”

NE1 CAN works with a growing number of schools and colleges and has recently teamed up with businesses including Marks & Spencer, Leeds Building Society and Nigel Wright to deliver business-led training and skills sessions including mock interviews and CV writing as well as quality work experience opportunities across a range of industry sectors for young people.

More events are planned over the coming months with Virgin Money and solicitors Bond Dickinson, along with many others.
