In celebration of British Science Week 2016 (14 - 18 March), Newcastle Sixth Form College is holding a series of lunchtime lectures for current students to attend.
Monday 14 March 12:30 – 1:30pm
Gregg Iceton - The Effects of Climate Change on Coral Reefs
Gregg will give an overview of coral reef biology and he will also discuss the many threats facing coral reefs. He will explore in detail the effects of climate change such as temperature and bleaching, ocean acidification and storm intensity.
He will also discuss other threats such as invasive species, micropollutants and plastics. He will cover different possible mitigation measures, including limiting carbon emissions, marine protected areas and mad science.
Tuesday 15 March 12:30 – 1:30pm
Geoff Bosson - The Biomedical Origins of Zombies, Werewolves and Vampires
Using some basic chemistry, physics and biology studied at GCSE and A Level, this interactive lecture will explore some of the fairy stories and tales we all grew up with. By understanding how electromagnetic radiation interacts with electrons in some important biochemical molecules we will try and show that zombies, werewolves and vampires really do exist as rare genetic diseases.
Wednesday 16 March 12:30 – 1:30pm
Elizabeth Gibson - Renewable Energy, Solar Energy Conversion
Elizabeth Gibson and her team are working to develop a low-cost way of turning sunlight into electricity or fuels. How to satisfy our energy demand is one of the greatest challenges facing our generation, but there is more than enough power in sunlight for everyone on the planet - even in the UK!
Thursday 17 March 12:30 – 1:30pm
Dave Newton - The Importance of Astrophysics
Dave Newton will outline the importance of astrophysics and how the universe can be seen a giant physics laboratory. As above, so below: The discoveries made in outer space can have a direct bearing on what happens in our everyday world. In return, scientific discoveries made in laboratories on Earth can also shed light on distant phenomena observed across the wider cosmos.
Friday 18 March 12:30 – 1:30pm
Danny Rawcliffe - Routes into Chemical Engineering
Danny Rawcliffe will give us an introduction to chemical engineering including the path Danny took to get to where he is now, what chemical engineering involves and the projects he has worked on. He will also talk about the chemical engineering challenges of the future. If you’re interested in a career in engineering, come along to find out more!
