Decolonising Artefacts at the Hancock Museum

16 February
Students visited the Hancock Museum today to learn how they are decolonising their artefacts.

They were shown a Benin Bronze, one of thousands of artefacts from the city of Benin stolen by the British Army in 1897.

Their curator spoke on the importance of providing a clear narrative as to how artefacts like the Benin Bronze were acquired. He also explained the steps that are taken to educate the public on the artefacts or repatriate them to their country of origin.
