National Youth Choir of Great Britain hold annual SING23 gathering at Newcastle Sixth Form College

02 March

The sixth form were delighted to be able to play host to the National Youth Choir of Great Britain (NYCGB) over the weekend, as they organised their annual ‘SING23’ programme, and brought together a wide range of young chorists from across the North East.

The weekend was led by a team from NYCGB and included 45 locally selected students coming together for a choir bootcamp experience. Working in small breakout groups, and then through whole choir rehearsals, NYCGB managed to form and perform with a brand new choir on Sunday afternoon to an invited audience at the sixth form. The 48 hour programme showcased some talented young performers and the creation of a new choir in just 48 hours was a great experience. Two of our own Music Technology A Level students were invited to become ambassador/volunteers for the weekend, and shared in the organisation and management of the choir, even taking part in the final performance.

Using the college facilities across the weekend, the students made an incredible sound as they performed a wide range of songs across multiple genre’s in a showcase performance.

NYCGB also used the sixth forms brand new music recording studio which is the centre piece of our Music Technology A Level resources, and working with the students, produced original content which will be premiered at a major event at the Royal Albert Hall in April 2023, to mark the 40th anniversary of the formation of the choir.

With over 1.7 million downloads of their compositions and 542k subscribers from 178 different countries on Spotify, the choir is truly a global leader in youth choirs.

Newcastle Sixth Form College were delighted to be asked to host this event, and support an organisation which creates exceptional cultural capital work in our region and promotes local talent.
