Top of the Class Students

Newcastle Sixth Form College students are top of the class

15 August

It's a double celebration for Newcastle Sixth Form College

Not only has it achieved outstanding A level results but it also officially opened its £22m new building to its students.

The college, which is the City’s first dedicated Sixth Form College boasts 150 classrooms, fully-equipped ICT and language labs, debating chamber and lecture theatre.

A record percentage of students are going to prestigious Russell Group universities this year, bucking the national trend for the state sector.

Principal of Newcastle Sixth Form College, Steve Gibson said: “I’d like to say congratulations to all of our students.

“They have achieved some remarkable results which demonstrate two years of hard work and the fantastic support of the staff at Newcastle Sixth Form College.”

“The occasion was made extra special by the fact that students could pick up their results from our fantastic new building.”

Student successes

Matthew Otubu, 17, was among hundreds of students that received their results. He is delighted to have achieved four As and to be going to York University, part of the Russell Group.

Matthew, who earlier this year won a Gold medal in the UK World Skills Environmental Science competition, will study a combined Philosophy, Politics & Economics BA (Hons) at York and hopes to have a career in politics.

He said: “I am delighted with my results. I couldn’t have asked for more and I’m so happy to be going to university.

“It’s great to know that all of my hard work has finally paid off.”

Emily O Regan, from Gateshead was recently crowned the UK’s Young Scientist of the Year, she is looking forward to starting her degree in Zoology with Conservation at Bangor University after achieving A*, two As and a B.

She said: “I am really happy with my results and I can’t wait to start my degree. It feels great knowing that I got into my first choice of university.”

“I’ve loved science since I was little and even filmed homemade nature documentaries in my garden.

“Science is such a male dominated field and I’m delighted to be an ambassador for girls who want to break into the industry.”

Principal of the Sixth Form College Steve Gibson added: “In September, we will have the very best facilities at our disposal in surroundings that have been designed and developed to the highest standards to create a dynamic world class learning environment.

“With an outstanding teaching staff and the addition of the new building, we believe there are no limits to what our students and we as a college can achieve.”
