Student Donating hair to charity

Newcastle Sixth Form College student offers hair raising donation to children’s charity

07 November

Demi Leigh Watson, 16, from North Shields, shaved her head and donated her previously long locks to the Little Princess Trust, a national charity who make and supply wigs for children who have lost their own hair because of cancer treatment, after a young member of her family was affected by the disease.

Demi Leigh, a student at Newcastle Sixth Form College, became aware of the charity and its work when her niece Ruby was diagnosed with leukaemia.

There was good news for her family, as little Ruby is now in remission – and Demi Leigh chose a novel way of celebrating.

She said: “The Little Princess Trust has been providing real hair wigs for young boys and girls who have lost their own hair because of cancer treatment, since 2006.

“They do such brilliant work and I wanted to celebrate the fact that Ruby is in remission; shaving my head and donating the hair seemed like a perfect way to support them.”

Gerard Garvey, Principal of Newcastle Sixth Form College said: “The Little Princess Trust is a worthwhile cause, so it is fantastic that Demi Leigh decided to contribute to their efforts.

“Everyone at Newcastle Sixth Form College is very proud of her.”
