Student and Parent

What do parents think of Newcastle Sixth Form College?

21 March

When past Newcastle Sixth Form College student Jennifer Olsen and her mum Angela popped in to see us recently, we took the opportunity to grab a coffee with them both to find out how Jennifer is getting on at university, and to chat to Angela about her experiences as a parent of an NSFC student.

Jennifer now studies Mechanical Engineering at Newcastle University after achieving A*A*BB in A Level Biology, Chemistry, Maths and Extended Project Qualification in 2016.

Jennifer said:

“I’m really enjoying university, although the work is challenging. I’m also involved in other aspects of university life, including working as part of the science outreach team, so visiting schools to promote science – and specifically women in science, which I love.”

Having home schooled Jennifer from an early age, Angela was concerned about her options for studying A Levels.

She said: “When Jennifer was deciding on her next steps after GCSEs, we visited a Newcastle Sixth Form College open evening and were immediately impressed. The building had a fantastic, welcoming, feel and the staff were so knowledgeable and friendly; they really put my mind at ease.

“Since Jennifer was home schooled, there were a few further details to sort out, but Newcastle Sixth Form College were very accommodating and also offered some good, impartial advice regarding Jennifer’s options.”

Competition winner

Once at Newcastle Sixth Form College, Jennifer went on to excel in her studies whilst also taking advantage of the extracurricular opportunities on offer, including winning Talent2030, a national engineering competition for girls.

Angela said: “When deciding to enter Talent2030, Jennifer received lots of support from the staff at Newcastle Sixth Form College, as well as having access to state of the art science equipment. It felt as though everyone at the college was really rooting for her to achieve what she was capable of and I trusted the staff to do the best for Jennifer.

“I am so proud of Jennifer and am grateful to Newcastle Sixth Form College for their support in helping Jennifer to achieve her best. I would recommend the college to anyone.”
